To launch the iPad version of the IKEA catalogue in Norway, ad agency SMFB created a brand new IKEA product called “Beröra”.

“Beröra” is a sewing kit with a special conductive thread that you sew into the index finger of your favourite gloves. Once the operation is done, the gloves work on a touch screen.

The idea in one clean sentence: Beröra turns any winter glove into a touchscreen glove, so the IKEA catalogue app fits the reality of how people live and move.

A launch mechanic that feels like a product, not a campaign

The smart move is that the “ad” looks and behaves like an IKEA item. A needle, instructions, and conductive thread. Simple enough to DIY, tangible enough to talk about, and useful enough to keep around after the novelty fades.

Conductive thread matters because most touch screens register conductive contact. So the kit essentially makes a glove fingertip “readable” to the device without forcing people to buy specialised tech gloves.

In cold-climate retail markets, the fastest way to accelerate digital adoption is to remove the tiny physical frictions that stop people trying it in the moment.

Results and recognition

The promotion generated a lot of interest. As reported at the time, 12,000 kits went in roughly two weeks, and the IKEA Norway iPad catalogue app broke download records.

The work later picked up awards-circuit recognition, including a One Show merit award, and gold at the Festival of Media in Montreux in the Best Launch Campaign category.

AlmapBBDO Brazil has developed a very unique and innovative iAd for the new Brazilian Audi magazine app. The ad seen in the video below appeared in various publications on the iPad and used a nice play on Apple’s “Slide to Unlock” feature to engage the users.

Users who saw the ad instantly recognized the swipe gesture used to unlock Apple devices. So after racing their finger around the track, they were rewarded with a free download of the first Audi Magazine copy from the app store.

Before I could publish this post I came across another “Slide to Unlock” iAd! It seems this iOS feature is becoming a popular creative feature for iAds. In the below example, Amnesty International has created an iAd in Sweden’s largest newspaper, DN, where readers were presented with an image of a prison cell and prisoner inside. “Slide to Unlock” was used to open the prison cell and reveal a strong call to action to join Amnesty International as an activist.

Augmented Reality. Hyperlinking the real world

A French company called Capturio turns a t-shirt into a business card. You point your phone at what someone is wearing, and the “link” is the fabric itself. No QR code required.

Right after that, Blippar in the UK takes the same idea to printed images. A newspaper page, poster, or pack becomes the trigger. The result is a 3D augmented reality overlay that appears on-screen the moment the image is recognised. Again, no QR code.

Is the end near for the QR code?

QR codes get put to good use in countless innovative projects. But the drift is clearly towards technology that produces similar results without visible codes.

Capturio. A business card you wear

Capturio’s concept is simple. The physical object becomes the identifier. A t-shirt behaves like a clickable surface in the real world.

Blippar. Turning print into a trigger

Blippar creates augmented reality effects from printed images without “activating” anything via a QR code. The interaction is straightforward:

  1. Download a custom app, in this case the Blippar app.
  2. Scan a Blippar-enabled printed image, identifiable by a small Blippar logo, using an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  3. Start interacting with the augmented reality 3D overlay on the screen.

Telibrahma. The same pattern shows up in India

In India, Telibrahma uses the same approach to increase experiential engagement for brands via traditional media like newspapers and posters.
